| The mandate for the development of a statistical institution was provided through resolutions arrived at the July 1998 Assembly of First Nations General Assembly, which called for the development of a First Nation capacity to monitor, analyze and disseminate information about the national fiscal and economic matters which impact on First Nations communities.
Subsequent resolutions were passed at the July 2000 and July 2001 editions of the AFN General Assembly, giving the Chiefs Committee on Fiscal Relations the mandate to pursue a legislative framework for the statistical institute and other fiscal institutions.
A draft legislative framework was developed in February 2001 and has served as the basis of discussions at the Working Group level with federal partners and will form the basis of the First Nations position in the formal drafting process of legislation. |
